Matthew Ryan Coyner, 47, of Chester, VA, died suddenly on Thursday, August 24. He was born April 1, 1976, in Peoria, IL, to Lynnce and Sharon Coyner. Matt Coyner was baptized at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Bartonville, IL, and confirmed in the faith at Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria, IL.
Matt Coyner graduated from Richwoods High School in 1994, where he played varsity football and ran track. Matt earned his Bachelors Degree in Science ('98) and Masters in Horticulture ('00) from University of Illinois, Champaign. He completed a summer internship at John Muir Health Medical Center's research division in San Francisco, CA ('00). He also completed an internship at Longwood Gardens - Harvard University in Chester County, PA. In 2002, Matt obtained a second Masters Degree in Science at Yale University before starting a PhD program at the University of Virginia.
While in high school, Matt Coyner and his dad, Lynnce, developed and stocked a lake on the Coyner family farm in Peoria, IL. Matt was an outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, boating, and the Chicago Bears. Matt came from a long line of Eagle Scouts and grew up Scouting with Boy Scouts of America, W.D. Boyce Council in Peoria, IL. As a dad, he passed his love of the outdoors and Scouting to his children and nephews. Matt served as Den and Troop Leader with BSA.
One summer, while Matt Coyner was a teacher's assistant at U of I, he met Carrie Emerson, of Chester, VA. A couple of years later, when Matt was attending Yale, the two connected again and started dating. During Matt's PhD program at UV, Carrie's father fell ill and asked Matt to run the family business, Emerson Construction. In 2004, Matt and Carrie married. Together, they built a home and a life in Chester, VA. They had 3 beautiful children, Hayden, Mason, and Delaney. After his father-in-law beat his battle with cancer he took back over the family business. Matt was an entrepreneur. While in college, he started a mold remediation company. It came naturally for him to start his own contractor business, Coyner Co Construction, in Chester, VA. He specialized in energy-efficient custom homes. In 2019, Matt and Carrie separated and divorced in December 2021.
Matt was a great father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his parents, Lynnce and Sharon Coyner, of Peoria, IL. His children Hayden, Mason, and Delaney, of Chester, VA. Two sisters, Jenny Coyner, of Atlanta, GA, and Emily (Dave) Ferrell, of Peoria, IL. Three nephews, Drew, Zac, and Jacob Ferrell, of Peoria, IL. And partner Nicole Munns of Chesterfield, VA.
Matt Coyner was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Orville and Ione Saboe, of West Union, IA, and his paternal grandparents, Robert and Mickey Coyner, of Muscatine, IA.
